Since I am currently president of the Fountain City alumni and seeing that I just arrived back from our convention on our 75th year I though it would be nice to summarize my trip.
For those who are not in the know this year was the 68th convention of Alpha Delta Gamma during our 75th year as a fraternity. The location for this year was Chicago, Illinois and was quite fitting since that is our birth town - Alpha chapter. This year they have extended the length by one day and thus it started August 2th. Due to limited vacation time I was only able to arrive on Thursday, August 5th. Brian Hesse, Joe, Adam, Jim, and Shane van-pooled down earlier in the week (sorry about the last names but I don't know them).
During the first night there I found the Zeta guys and headed up to Wayne Palmer-Ball's suite. There I found many alumni including Spike, Jeff Wyrick and others. The night ended with me and Joe and Brother Smulders' yammering it up until 1:30am.
Then next day was a day off and merely resulted in an unsuccessful attempt to meet my Aunt, eat lunch, visit the Science and Industry Museum, and more drinking later that night.
Saturday was the day of meeting and several thing were brought up that merit comments. We have a new (potential) colony - a local frat. at John Carroll University in Cincinnati, OH. I say potential pending approval by the school for frats to go national. Hesse, who was influential in their discovery (he ran across them by accident) is assured that the school will allow it. Four of them showed up and they were very impressive and impressed. Very similar ideals. You can check them out at their web page link below (1).
James Van de Voorde, head of the ADGEF, announce that the alumni web page (linked below (2)) we refurbished and ready for use. One of the good features is the updating of your current address for the national records. Please do this to make sure they are up to date on you. He also announced a new printing of the alumni directory (for sale for $15). You can also check out the national homepage (linked below (3)) hosted by past-president James Garner. I am going to throw my page in as well were all I have is a few email addresses and a copy of this letter. If you know of any mistakes or additions please email me back.
The evening ended in a nice evening dinner in the hotel. Slides of past conventions and group pictures lead to dinner (chicken and fillet mignon) and the awards. While the Zeta chapter did not win anything this year Hesse received the Alumni of the Year award!
Next year is planned for Washington D.C. and the following year is in Louisville, KY.
As a reminder - all Zeta alumni (hell, all ADG alumni) are welcome to the monthly "meeting" at the Jazz on 39th street in Kansas City every first Thursday of each month. Show up by 6:00 for dinner. No dues (yet...). Usually at least three show up but we've had up to ten people. Hope to see you all there...
